Did you get SA'd walking out in broad daylight again? So tough for all us men getting SA'd in public

SA is the only violent crime where women have higher numbers. Men are victims of other violent crimes in far greater numbers, day or night.

You realize the whole reason they are talking about it is because of SA though, right?

Yes, centering their narratives and constantly, viciously ignoring that men have more to fear.

More to fear and more rational fears are not the same thing

Probably in part because women routinely limit their activities to avoid the risk of violence. How many men do you know who text a friend every time they get into an Uber as a safety precaution in case they get kidnapped or assaulted?

Yes, you just reiterated what my meme said, "we don't let our fear consume or control us", despite the fact that we're at much greater risk.

My condolences to you with your 1 in 3 risk of sexual assault . . . but your data does shine a lovely light on the "protect the womenfolks" conservative talking point.

And if men are at "much greater risk", it seems likely that it's because men aren't taking precautions, as women have learned to do: maybe you're just less good at risk management.

Okay, and?

And multiple things:

*One could argue that men are not taking reasonable precautions against violence because they've been taught that it's somehow VIRtuous to get into fights, etc., which suggests that we're looking at the cultural effects of toxic masculinity . . . definitely not a sign of emotional intelligence.

*Two, I'd love to see your data point pivoted to attack the whole "women are at risk because of [insert minority group]". It's one of the most annoying intersectional pieces of bigotry in the right wing toolbox.

Funny how percentages can be used as propaganda, too.

Eyeballing that chart, the differences in real numbers are roughly the same, around 100k for both stats. But because the SA chart is so much smaller, it makes the percentage skyrocket misleadingly.

It's similar to an article I read a few years back about women complaining that female incarceration in one state were going up because of misogyny. Female incarceration rates had gone up around 600%, while male incarceration had only gone up 10%.

They ignored the actual hard population numbers.

There were something like 800k male inmates and roughly 1000 female inmates. For the women, a 600% increase meant 6k more incarcerated females, while men's incarceration went up by 80k.

(The numbers are rough estimates because it was a long time ago I read the article, and I didn't think to save it)

I think you're confusing "nuance" with propaganda. Both of those numbers are true, they just have different significances, and you need to be math literate to understand the relevance. For instance, approximately 1 in 3 American women experiences sexual assault or attempted sexual assault: that makes a difference in our lives and how we live them.

Your point is reminiscent of some of the thinking in Dr. Ben Goldacre's Bad Science (an absolute delight to read). However, math has a human meaning too. Small percentages can have big effects, and if six times as many women are getting incarcerated somewhere, something seriously messed up is going on. Your posting suggests that you are a male teen with some math education who hasn't yet gotten into more sophisticated social science. The trick is to put the pieces together.
