How do you "accidentally" kill someone? You would have to click the attack button, confirm who you're attacking, and then land that attack without missing, which will more than likely require more than one attack. You'd have to do "accidentally" do all of that.

half because i didnt know that you could just spam spare for toriel and accidentally killed her and half because i wanted to "accidentally" kill mettaton because he was a jerk and was frustrating( i just quit and reloaded the game for toriel and didnt kill her that time and for mettaton i resisted the urge to kill him)

Well, most people on their first walkthrough wouldn't know to spare Toriel (if they've never seen the game before).
