Keep in mind, color animation was brand new, so a lot of people (especially kids) saw it as magic. Over time, it lost its ability to easily scare people, as most things often do. One of the first movies ever made, entitled "Train Coming Into A Station" featured a train moving towards the camera/audience, and it scared people enough that they ran out of the theater, because they thought the train was actually going to hit them.
