In addition, the difference also is that they both secretly wanted an open border while deporting only bc that's what people want. Shutting down the border for real was the deal-breaker - no cheap replacement assets available.
Obamas promises of endless paths to citizenship I think is the more official difference between Dems and Reps.

When Ronald Reagan was president, the negotiation with the Dems was that the 1 million illegals present in the country would get amnesty in exchange for closing the border. It turned out it was closer to 3 million people and the border was never effectively enforced afterwards. The 1986 amnesty bill also opened the floodgates with enhanced chain migration. Ever since the Dems keep wanting amnesty again in exchange for a comprehensive immigration bill. That was done in 1986 and it was a fraud.

Trump is finally delivering upon the closing of the border that was promised the American people in the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
