Washington was not a Republican, although even though he was not a member, he basically was in effect a Federalist courtesy of the influence Alexander Hamilton exerted on him. The Federalist Party was proto - Republican.

Jefferson founded the Democratic-Republican Party, which while also known then as the Republican Party, actually provided the roots of what later became the Democratic Party.
