Recently I supported the Artist behind Wawawiwa (Andrés J. Colmenares) and bought the two books from his graphic novel series, Peculiar Woods! Below is a small review! Book #1 plot: A boy named Iggie is taken by his adoptive mother to live in a small town called Peculiar Woods with his biological mother. There, he discovers that some objects come to life, including his childhood blanket and a chair named Boris. The next day, Iggie and his new friends help two chess pieces return to their "ancient underwater city", a journey that involves entering the woods and crossing a flooded town. During their quest, Iggie encounters a villainous washing machine named Lazarus Gallington, who tries to attack him and his friends in the flooded town. Book #2 plot: Taking place a couple months after the events in the first book, Iggie is informed by his blanket, whom he names 'Faye', that Boris has been taken to an "underground prison" in his school. With the help of his neighbor Angie, Iggie and Faye successfully rescue Boris, but are suddenly confronted by Lazarus. Lazarus threatens to flood Peculiar Woods if the group doesn't help him find his owner, who got "abducted by Intelligents". Splitting into two groups, Iggie, Angie, Faye, Boris, and a lamp named Nobu work together to solve the mystery of the Intelligents and stop Lazarus to save Peculiar Woods. My review:; I always enjoyed the Wawawiwa comics when they first started popping up on the internet, so I was really excited when this series was released! Much like Wawawiwa, Peculiar Woods has a cast of very unique characters and uses clever jokes throughout the series. All the plot, adventure, and suspense leaves me wanting more! In terms of the characters, they're all very likeable; Iggie and Angie are two adventurous kids, Faye is super adorable, Boris makes me laugh, and Nobu, despite getting less attention, seems like a very loyal friend. Lazarus is, IMO, a perfectly written villain. The climax of the second book was very tragic and I felt really bad for him. No spoilers, though. After the second book's release back in June of 2024, Andrés hasn't said anything about the series. I'm hoping he's not done with it yet because, to me, it felt kinda short. I'd love to see more adventures with Iggie and his friends, and maybe even some more small webcomics featuring them! Overall, I really enjoyed the series and I can't wait to see what Andrés will create next!
