Oh, back then this was world news, big news. I mean this was like headline news for weeks, months even. It was seen as a sign of excess, corruption, how she and her husband lived so extravagantly while the average citizen struggled to get by.
But also, face it, it was shoes. What could be bigger news than something so ridiculous as a ginormous collection of shoes in a big giant walk-in closet.
