My overarching belief is that people's opinions and beliefs are formed by their experiences. I think material suffering leads to extremism and hate. It's why we see terrorism from the Arabic nations; they were colonised and economically exploited for decades, if not centuries, which has lead the population to extremism. I understand that's a generalisation, but my point still stands."
My reply:
Middle Eastern nations have been colonized and economically exploited from millennia, the birth of civilization and then a succession of empires rode on the back of this.
It is not, however, what led to current extremist behavior in the region. Extremism was deliberately seeded and funded by promoting nationalist movements and Wahhabism. The intent would be for them to serve as a bulwark and proxies against the spread of Socialism and pan-Arabic Nasserism.
A Mosque in Munich : Nazis, the CIA, and the Muslim Brotherhood in the West by Ian Johnson explains how it all started. I have yet to read it myself, but intend to eventually. Reading the synopsis is a good start.
