Last week the UK passed an Online Safety Act with the official reason for it being to prevent teens from visiting unsafe websites. However, this is based on what parliament deems unsafe for children, so naturally a lot of nsfw sites got banned, and you needed to use your government issued ID to access the site. This was the main thing that got joked about. Then it was discovered that SA prevention sites and Suicide prevention sites also got locked. Which increased the awareness of the issue and led to over 300k signatures for a petition for the UK government to get rid of the act. In most circumstances with that many signatures, the UK would usually opt to repeal the act because most of their population doesn’t like it.

This time they doubled down, and are now looking for ways to ban the usage of VPNs and other workarounds within the UK. Most people don’t want their IDs is multiple databases (as many of them aren’t as secure). Not only that, you have to re-submit your ID every time you visit a single page (hence why so many people are banning VPNs). The most recent wave of banned services that required IDs were most social media and some news outlets that are foreign.
