We want to help good immigrants but don't have the capacity. This is what happens when other countries aren't as open as us.

It still looks like a prison and probably treats its occupants as such. But notice how it has a bunk for everyone and air conditioning, unlike the ones under Obama? This just goes to show how long the immigration system has been in shambles. | image tagged in immigration, trump, opinion, america, obama, politics | made w/ Imgflip meme maker

Alligator Alcatraz doesn't need to be justified. Break the law, spit in our face, pay the price. Heck, prisoners there are living better than a lot of our veterans. If I was broke and living in Florida, I'd be happier there then on the street. It gets hot enough in summer to die of heat strok, cold enough in winter to die of hypothermia, and you can die of dehydration and starvation anywhere. Thanks to our tax dollars, even the scumbags who end up here aren't dying of any of those things

The facilities have improved, but the way ICE is selecting and treating their detainees needs to change. They already took care of the bad actors(gang members and those with felony charges) among undocumented people in the first round of deportations. Now they're treating those with minor charges or no charges the same way, which isn't that fair to me. Many Americans are starting to change their mind on ICE. Like any government department, it needs checks and balances, otherwise it can turn sour even if it was formed with good intentions.

A bunk for everyone? Or to double the usage of square footage?

There's slight difference between something hastily put together literally overnight to facilitate an emergency and another built with more permanence in mind to warehouse prisoners for profit.

Further, the question isn't what was over a decade ago, but how this compares to what was made by Trump himself in two separate terms.

If our country can't treat undocumented immigrants humanely, it needs to reduce the immigration rate at the source. One way is by investing in Latin American development that reduces poverty and crime while increasing job opportunities, thus lessening the need to migrate.

Another way is by convincing other developed countries such as Russia and Japan to be more open to immigration in order to combat population decline and acquire young workers. Then we would need to teach the undocumented population the needed languages and skills, fly them out, and apply for visas in those countries. It allows these people to find a better life abroad while offsetting the high immigration rate in America(US).

Both options are likely more expensive but more humane than what Trump or other presidents have done.

The source of illegal aliens coming to the US is people illegally hiring them. The way to end that is to arrest those who legally hire them and put them in prison until they get the hint and legally hire US citizens.

We have a third of a billion people, and 727,000 of them are homeless. Now if those people and others would rather be homeless than work hard picking lettuce and washing dishes, that's their choice. But it should not be the choice of foreigners who should be busy taking care of the economy in their own countries instead of ditching them to come here because of greed.

The difference between Latin America and the US? They have an entire year to grow their crops, we have half. That's it. That's the difference. Mexico, for example, has a lot of oil, a lot of silver, and a lot of gold in them are hills. But they also have is a Spanish Colonial culture that holds people back. That's on them. They can adapt, or they can stay poor. It's their decision.

Russia is barely developed. Regardless, it does have its own migration problem. From abroad, and from within. Russian Russians don't like other people from the Russian Federation moving into Russia proper. And they sure don't like people from other countries. What are they going to do with Latin Americans? Now we're going to re-educate them and teach them how to speak Russian because this would be a cost-saving measure for the horrible dent our illegal workforce does for us?

Same with Japan, they have an aging population and a labor shortage, but they're puking at the thought of immigrants from countries right next door coming in to pick up the slack. If they want their elderly to starve to death with dirty diapers, then that's on them. They're certainly not going to take people from our hemisphere.

I just read today that the Earth has tilted 31.5 inches in the last two decades. That's from sucking all the water out of aquifers. Humans are tilting the Earth. It's time to stop breeding and destroying the planet. We're supposed to be worried about carbon dioxide, and the planet has shifted 31.5 inches. And they wonder why the weather is wonky. Are we going to wait till it's shifted 10 ft and the planet wobbles like Mars does? Then what are we going to do? Pump our sewage until the Ogallala Aquifer?

Sorry for coming across so snarky, you seem like a nice person.

Thanks for the insight. The issue with prosecuting those who hire undocumented people, however, is that they prefer hiring them because they are generally more productive and can do the same work for lower wages. Businesses big and small, even those whose owners lean right politically, have urged Trump to dial down ICE out of fear of losing employees and productivity.

Our country may have be able to better accomodate both migrant and citizen workers if it had developed more affordable and safe housing, as well as provide protections against automation and outsourcing.
