Is it tarnished? Maybe even irreversibly corroded?

Or is the patina that covers the Statue of Liberty actually protecting what it represents?

Only time will tell

Yeah. My thoughts exactly. Here's hoping. I've also wondered what affect it would have to polish it back to the original color...what would people think? Like deer in headlights, probably. But then what? If I had enough money, I'd pay for it to be done. And hope the experiment would become a treatment to help heal America.

They did a major refurbishing in anticipation of its centennial birthday in 1986, and while they considered cleaning the tarnish, they determined the patina actually provided a protective layer to the rest of the copper beneath, and that by scraping off this coat, it would of course just tarnish again and they can't just keep polishing it off because that would be removing layers of copper over time.

How thin is the copper?

I don't know if it's an inch and a half or two or more... That's all the walls are, it's just a big shell of copper. It's sweltering inside because of that, between the copper catching all that sun and the breathing of all the tourists, it's like a sauna. And it's a single length spiral staircase going all the way to the top, so basically it's a long slow crawl, and no pausing so you just basically go to the crown walk the inside of that, then then go back down. People used to be able to go to the torch too, but it started weakening, so they closed that off ages ago.

I don't know how things are with upgrades and whatnot, I did the standard school trip thing once before the refurbishing. But I do believe they really couldn't do much to expand the staircase, so it's still a slow walk.

So, the statue is only a few inches thick? And the staircase doesn't lean upon the structure of the statue? Only a few inches thick? Wow. The frame of the statue must be very strong!

Same thing happened with the main entrance of the Bronx Zoo, been green since I have no idea how long. I haven't heard anything about cleaning it, but we're used to it this way anyway.

It's a gorgeous green, no doubt. And I do like the color of the Statue of Liberty.
