Colonialism had good and bad parts. Some good parts about it are developed infrastructure like roads, canals, railways, ports, etc that made shipping goods much more efficient than carrying them manually or even on pack animals. There was also local government with laws that applied equally and were more just, ending slavery, etc. Colonialism also brought education to the colonized. They also got warring tribes to stop fighting each other, allowing more uses for land and brought some stability to the regions. True cultures might be suppressed many times, but these cultures often included human sacrifices, cannibalism, polygamy, mistreatment of women (women being little more than slaves even when they were free), tortures and trial by ordeal. Many African tribes murdered twins thinking one was a devil-child, and witch-doctors would claim some other tribe had cursed them in times of famine, defeat in war, floods, fires etc — so they would raid the other tribe to get prisoners to kill. Such culture needed to be suppressed so that they could come out of superstition and become civilized.
