Just think about it. You come out of high school, you join the military for a set number of years, and you get benefits like housing, healthcare, student loans, and several others paid for by the government. Seems like a great deal. What happens when so many people take that deal that it kills supply for those benefits? We’ve seen this happen before after WWI.
The one nice thing about military is that it teaches discipline, but since they’ve lowered standards for joining the military by a significant degree, those disciplines have lowered along with it. Modern military folk aren’t nearly as responsible or level headed as they used to be.
I say that generally as I’ve met some of them. I’m not saying you’re automatically like this if you’re in the military right now. I’m just making a point about how the one non-monetary benefit of the military has waned over the years by lowering its barrier to entry.
