Who gives a flying damn about Israel (religious reasons don't count)

Um . . . why don't religious reason count? Reasons are reasons. People support or reject something for a variety of reasons. For instance conservatives tend to support Israel because of the cold hard fact that having a solid ally in the Middle East is politically and economically expedient and also because conservatives do tend to be religious in nature.

Leftists on the other hand tend not to support Israel because they are pretty much innate Jews-haters and not incidentally atheists. As for the practical aspects, actual practicality has never much motivated leftist 'thinking'.

There you go . . . a multiplicity of 'reasons' on both sides.

Myself I don't care to be drawn into WWIII because Israel is still struggling even to survive amidst a sea of hate-filled and bigoted enemy nations. I also don't personally care a hill of beans for the religious aspect. The practical reasons do concern me a little bit but only because I don't know if the world would be better off or not if the Jews-hating Left had their way and the Muslim nations managed to wipe out Israel.

Having a strategic ally is one thing. Giving that ally the green light to repeatedly break international law is another.

Some "leftists" are actually old-school antisemitic, yes. I am vehemently opposed to that. So are some "conservatives". Some can't seem to distinguish between Jews, Israelis, "Zionists" (quotes because it depends how you define that) or the Israeli government and its policies/actions and lump everyone together.

A lot of leftists just oppose the slaughter of innocent people and other human rights violations by the Israeli government and armed forces. It has (or should have) nothing to do with being Jewish or not. Or being atheist. Plenty of Jews and/or Israelis are also atheists. Not all Jews (or Israelis) support the actions of the Israeli government either.

Plus not everyone in Israel is Jewish. There are sizeable minorities of Arab Israelis (both Muslim and Christian) as well as Druze and other groups.

Opposing US foreign policy also doesn't automatically mean you hate Americans as a people.
