So, moderate people resented attempts to address the unfairness that they had been benefiting from? Alas, human nature.
So, today is Juneteenth, when we commemorate the end of slavery in the US. Anyone who describes that as "woke" in a negative way has just outed their own discomfort with acknowledging the deep racial inequity that has (and still does) shaped our country. Ditto with Pride, if you ask me. If we can recognize that the system is unfair in ways that affect us badly (the price of egggggsss!), we can start to recognize that other people, other groups, get a worse deal. That's what "woke" should mean: having woken to the existence of other people's needs and stories.
