Islam has some morally questionable values, but if you are assuming that all Muslims are violent extremists, you would be wrong. I saw one person in this stream claim that Islam should be banned in the United States, which is probably the craziest thing I’ve ever come across here. I could argue that Christianity and even most other religions have problematic sections of their scripture, but you can’t limit freedom or expression or religion

Nobody said anything about banning Islam here.

By here do you mean the whole stream or just this meme

I don’t care about the stream

I wasn’t saying that you wanted to ban Islam: I was just saying that I saw a meme on here that said that

Should I care?

If it didn’t exist, the world would have been a better place.Theres no argument against that.I don’t want it banned.

Do you think the world would be a better place without Christianity as well? Think about it. The crusades, colonialism, manifest destiny. You could argue that the world could be better without any religion
2 ups, 2d
The crusade was a reaction to the Islamic conquest. And colonialism was a net benefit

Of course I don’t mean to say that religion should not exist, I’m just pointing out the flaws in your statement.

If we didn’t have any religion or ideology, I guess the world the world would have been kinda boring

Oh yay, actual racism!

Islam is not a race. There’s white Muslims. So not racism. Anti-religion is a more accurate description

Not true. Muslims stopped the Europeans from going to Asia. It wasn’t until the crusade when the zero was discovered by Europeans
1 up, 1d
Europeans did not discover zero.

It was trade with Muslims, not war with them, that got Europeans to develop their math.

Not necessarily. The Europeans were slow to adopt to Indian numbers. It wasn’t until the 1500s when they fully embraced Indian numbers

Because of trade with other Mediterranean cultures (mostly Muslim ones). And, of course the Muslim universities were the last word in medical education throughout the middle ages.

Not entirely true. Most merchants were Jews and Armenians. Everything the Muslims learned was from Greeks, Chinese and Indians. The Muslims never really “invented” things. They absorbed everything until the 1500s
1 up, 1d
Most merchants were what? Where?

The Muslims never really “invented” things? They were having their Golden Age when Europe was stuck in the Dark Ages for a thousand years because Europeans were utterly incapable of coming up with anything of their own without a Rome to force it upon the hinterland barbarians.

Moorish Spain was the only place in Europe with institutes of higher learning at a time when the rest of Europe was 99% illiterate. 99% illiterate.

Between that and Muslim Silk Road trade, the seeds of the Renaissance were planted. And if it wasn't for Venice being the western terminus hub of that trade, Christian Europe would still be a place of thatch roofed mud brick huts burning people at the stake for daring to come up with the occasional innovative idea and giving speeding tickets to cart dragging donkeys.

The Muslim world includes a lot of cultures and history. Don't be so quick to dismiss them all.

And while it's true that Muslim thinkers benefitted from previous cultural achievements ("Standing on the shoulders of giants" is how Einstein described his relationship with his intellectual forebears), they also achieved a lot . . . think about Al-Khwarizmi.

I like coffee, silly. So….You’re conceding that Muslims didnt invent anything. Without all those inventions by other cultures and people, the Muslim “golden age” would never have happened

Coffee culture comes out of Arabia. And without a lot of inventions and resources from other cultures, Europe's good times wouldn't have happened either. We all exist in dialogue with other places and times.

Not an Arabic invention though. Coffee was an Ethiopian thing before the Arabs picked it up
1 up, 1d
The beans were (according to legend) first popular among Ethiopian Christians, but coffee culture (which is exactly what I said) comes out of the Arab and extended Muslim world.

Now, now, don't discount the grand contributions of Dark Age Europe. 1001 and ways to burn witches and other assorted heretics. Now that's civilization.

Check mate, Silk Road nations.

And lutefisk and haggis, of course. Purely European inventions.
