It didn't even house many prisoners. | Why was Alcatraz closed? As a concept it seems ideal: it's very hard to escape from an island. But in practice it was just too expensive. All supplies had be shipped in from the mainland. Being surrounded by the ocean meant that salt water constantly ate away at the structures, requiring frequent repair. they reopen Alcatraz that will be very costly indeed. | image tagged in phil hartman, prison, history, waste of money, you fool you fell victim to one of the classic blunders | made w/ Imgflip meme maker

But was it really that far from the mainland?

1¼ miles. I know how to swim, but I'd probably get exhausted before I made it. If you managed to get a boat you'd probably be easy to spot. Still, in spite of what Trump thinks: a group of three did escape once. In order to get permission to film at Alcatraz the movie had to have an ending that implied that they didn't survive.

I wasn't thinking in terms of escape. I was thinking about needing to ship in supplies from the mainland. 1 1/4 miles doesn't strike me as being that difficult of a supply run.
