ahh
yeah I didn't understand that at first
but tbh I found out that the countries he's tariffing have already been tariffing us for decades and we've just let them take advantage of us. Someone my dad knew in the 80s tried to buy something out of Canada and there was a 300% tariff on it so he had trouble affording it. It does annoy me a bit that countries can take advantage of the US and then if Trump does something about it, they can publicly try to get pity and they'll get it bc 45% of the US will just take whatever side Trump isn't on, even if it would be to our detriment.
And bc it's more expensive to make things in the US than China, companies just make stuff out of China and thus China and other countries get all the trade money and we get none
Theres a reason the US has Korean cars, German cars, Chinese cars, etc, but you will find no American cars in Europe, China or Korea
What Trumps trying to do is to give companies incentive to bring their manufacturing back to the US, so that we'll put out products for other countries to use, and we'll get money in the long run.
And once that happens, Trump plans to use this to fund the government more than Americans paying the government. He actually wants to get rid of federal tax, if possible. He actually wants to change the IRS into the external revenue service and get money from selling things to other countries instead of just simply taxing Americans and giving us nothing in return. It's actually how to make a country more prosperous.
So it'll sting at first with pricing, but the goal would actually benefit the American government and American taxpayers in the long run. My biggest worry though is that it might take longer than 4 years for this to work, and if a Dem wins the 2028 election, they'd probably just implode the whole thing and say "see Trumps idea was stupid".
