We shut it down to avoid having another Spanish flu situation. If we didn’t, the consequences would have been much worse.

The data doesn’t back that claim up. Florida didn’t shut down and, despite having a significantly older median population than California or New York, where lockdowns were among the most draconian, they fared similarly if not better than did NY or California. Sweden also did not lock down and did very well.
