To understand its size, you have to separate the present-day territories of the State of Palestine—about 6,020 square kilometers, encompassing the West Bank and Gaza Strip—from the broader, historical Palestine. That region spans roughly 27,000 square kilometers between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. That difference in scope is what makes for accurate discussion.
Jesus of Nazareth's origins are deeply tied to that historical geography. The Bible says he was born in Bethlehem, a town within the region that is Palestine today. But he spent his formative years in Nazareth, in Galilee. At the time, the region was Judea, under Roman rule. The name "Palestine" came much later. So while Jesus lived in the same land that's called Palestine today, the name and the people in charge of that land have changed over the centuries. That's what makes the connection between Jesus and Palestine so rich and so complicated!
