My question would be how did they name the river before the advent of high altitude flying revealed the dragon ?

It was because it actually became that shape after the river was dammed up for a reservoir, creating the shape we now see, around 1998, if I got the year correct. I had looked it up last night, saw it on Reddit!

You can see the dam at the top of the head.
