Maybe you need to find a happy balance. Find more intelligent questions to ask, such as when the destination in question was built, or who owns/runs it.
It wasn't a destination, it was a religious ritual we had to attend (Coming of age related). I had asked her who the ritual was for (She didn't tell me), but she didn't answer and was still grumpy.
