Ideally race and gender should have no impact on hiring or firing. There are some few jobs in which gender still matters. One wonders how many male police officers and fire-fighters have been injured or killed because their female opposite was too weak to get the job done. It's not always the person who failed to subdue a suspect or carry an injured person away form a acene who gets hurt; sometimes it's the partner unexpectedly having to leap forward to do the other person's job in an emergency situation.
But those two aside, most women can do just as well as most men in most jobs. So we return to the concept of merit. Who's meeting the necessary criteria for the work under consideration? Skin tone and gender become non-issues.
