Nobody knows if Americans can handle the truth, since that's never been done before. From Hearst to Walter Cronkite there have ALWAYS been propagandists with an angle to promote. Some did so cynically and some did so in earnest; but to one degree or another they all preferred some form of propaganda to the truth as did the organizations they owned or worked for.
