It’s story time!

In 2014 Ukraine had a democratically elected government. While this government was not cozy with Russia they also were not openly hostile. But this didn’t sit well with people like Obama and Biden because they couldn’t use Ukraine to launder money like they could if things were destabilized a little. So they staged a coup and put the current government that is hostile to Russians into power. As it turned out though Crimea and the Donbas region had majority populations that are ethnically Russians, (much like how Alsace-Lorraine is part of France but has many ethnic Germans). The Russians living in Ukraine now began to be treated like second class citizens and so decided, after a long train of abuses, to sever their ties with Kiev. This p*ssed off the Ukrainians government and so they started shelling the Russians in Donbas.

Well, thanks for the Kremlin perspective. This is a massive spin on the actual situation, in which Russian agents deliberately destabilized the Donbass region.

"Toward the end of February 2014, unidentified military figures, later confirmed to be Russian personnel, surrounded the airports in Crimea, a majority-Russian peninsula in Ukraine. The Crimean autonomous assembly was then seized by pro-Russian forces."

Well, he did admit it was a story.

And yet your source says they were a Russian majority region, in a country now becoming more openly hostile to Russians.

That's an overly simplistic reading. The Irish-heavy parts of Boston aren't agitating to break free and join Ireland, and the many, many Texans with Mexican ancestry aren't trying to overthrow the US government and secede. The part of Ukraine with lots of ethnic Russians wouldn't have broken loose without a lot of actual Russians monkey-wrenching.

You’re seriously comparing our society, which has always been a melting pot, to Ukraine and claiming that Ukraine hasn’t maltreated the Russians who live there? This may be a shock, but apples aren’t oranges.

Central Europe has always been a melting pot, if in a different way. And people are people.

Tell that to the Balkans States.

Even if that were the case, I’m guessing that you’ve never heard of Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam that is calling for a portion of the US to be made a country for blacks only.

In a democracy, we have room for those divergent voices (and you know, the Nation of Islam makes a wicked sweet potato pie). The thing that messes it up is another government sending in armed agents to turn the normal disagreements of a pluralistic society into actual war.

So you oppose Zalenskyy shelling the Russians in Donbas?

Absolutely right. I think the Civil War was the result of a failure in diplomacy. Nothing at all in the constitution gave Lincoln the right to call up an army to invade the south, and especially not for the war criminal Sherman to leave a scar on Georgia and the Carolinas that can still be seen from the air to this day. Conversely nothing in the constitution forbade secession.

The Southerners' armed insurrection and attack on US forts absolutely justified the mobilization of the army, not to invade, but to secure US territory. Donbass is part of Ukraine.
