They might if they knew that Lincoln never actually opposed slavery on a federal level. Had the southern states in secession given up before Jan 1, 1863 they would have never been set free.

Actually the secret service was created at the height of the war in order to combat counterfeiting. It wasn’t until after his assassination that they became the presidential bodyguards, and they came because some counterfeiters tried to steal his body.
