I mean... with custom ROM's your android phone is technically supported for as long as you keep doing software upgrades until the custom ROM ceases development but most people don't have the technical knowledge to do so

The general consumer wouldn't even know what a custom rom is, let alone rooting it
Pros of having an iPhone:
- Potentially longer software support
- Better optimized performance
- Better cameras
- Better security against malware
- Bragging rights
Pros of having an Android:
- Variety for any budget
- Customization freedom
- Open source OS
- Android's under 18
