The two wireless operators on the Titanic came very close to doing what Bill Lumbergh is asking.
At 11:40 PM, the Titanic hit an iceberg.
At 12:15 AM, the first distress signals were sent out. The distress call was CQD.
At 12:45 AM, the wireless operators switched from CQD to SOS.
At 2:05 AM, Captain Smith told the two wireless operators, "Men, you have done your full duty. You can do no more. Abandon your cabin. Now it's every man for himself." Instead of doing so, they kept tapping away for five more minutes until 2:10 AM, when water started coming into the wireless room.
