I know that in character the h is silent but Chara and character are different words

Personally, I pronounce the “cha” in “chara” the same way I pronounce the honorific “Chan.” Anything else feels weird to my mind, because my inner monologue is either in a thick Texan or a feminine Kansai accent most of the time.
