History you say? LET'S TALK ABOUT SOME HISTORY!
"God's chosen people" couldn't get along and split into 2 kingdoms, were dominated for 2500 years by the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Romans, Ottomans, 2 Muslim Caliphates.
-Around 500 BC the Northern Kingdom of Israel had fallen into paganism, mostly because they kept wanting to marry hot pagan women. So God allowed the Assyrians to conquer them.
-Shortly thereafter the Babylonians conquered the Southern Kingdom of Judea, where Jerusalem is. That's where the Temple of Solomon was that housed the Ark of the Covenant. The Jews loved that temple more than Catholics love statues of Mary. The Babylonians tore the temple down and only God knows what really happened to the Ark.
-The Persians conquered the Babylonians, kept control of Jewish lands, but did let them build a second temple.
-There was a very brief time that the Maccabees won independence, but civil war broke out and they asked a Roman general to help, and he wound up making them part of the Roman Empire.
-The Jews didn't like the Romans telling them what to do, so around 70 AD the Romans stomped them and tore down the second temple brick by brick. That's why people pray at the Wailing Wall, because it's a wall that was near the temple and is all that's left of it.
-In 135 AD during the Second Jewish Uprising the Romans sent in 13 legions and killed every Jew in Judea, burned every temple, and destroyed many towns and villages, and renamed the place Syria Palestine. Jews claim the Romans were just trolling them or some such nonsense. When you take a place over, you can rename it whatever you want, especially if there's nobody left alive there to argue about it.
-Then the Ottomans (Turkey) took over from the Romans. And God willing they'll do it again and retake Israel.
-Then the British took over from the Ottomans around 1920. And the Brits don't get enough hate for forming a military base named after the country that used to be there 2500 years ago.
-Then during WW2 the Nazis set about exterminating all the Jews, so a Christian country had to go save them, which I think was a mistake.
So you see, God hasn't been with Israel for 2500 years. You'd think that people getting their butts handed to them for a thousand years would get the idea that they weren't "God's chosen people" any more. But there was ANOTHER thousand years that included one of the strongest militaries in history slaughtering millions of them, and CHRISTIANS had to save them.
