Me too, I grow, raise, barter and hunt. I have what I need and enough to share with people I care most about. I was taught young to make do with what you have before you seek more just for the sake of having more. This morning, I watched a deer that rich men would pay a small fortune to shoot and hang on a wall feeding in my yard. My freezers are full, so I just smiled and watched him. I didn't need the ego boost of killing something I didn't need. I am happy knowing he is living well and hope he leaves enough offspring that when the time of need does arrive, I can get what I need when I need it.

I give away a bunch of food, this is a poor area. So, I have several freezers. I can switch back and forth from the grid to off grid quickly, not only saves money but also keeps everything running. I have gotten selective on who I help and how, I am not enabling weakness and greed. We will feed someone, but we decide what they get, how much, how often and how they will pay it forward. The system works well so far. Bonus, when I need help it just takes a quick phone call.

I run a couple of freezers & have a generator, but I have weaned myself from them for the most part.
I used to keep a truck gas tank full & stabilized for the gen but I'm on the KISS program now, so I stopped doing that.

I had that as a goal, but life happens, people know that I give away food and others randomly bring me some to help others. Since it is never planned, I have to keep freezers ready. Some also use area churches but they have the same problem, what comes in and out changes often. I will get a call when they run out or I send someone their way.

Nice to know you let them grow. I do the same, watch them grow or drop one that is injured and on occasion I will let someone take their first deer. Sometimes that takes a while, I have had people miss a shot I could have taken off the hip. I can also hunt from my porch
