I understand the desire to have a peaceful meal together. But I’ve never adhered to that made up rule: no talking religion or politics. I think that rule was made up by people who don’t know much about either topic. Yet they have a so-called understanding of religion &/or politics that is actually a MISunderstanding…. Which they are quick to ARGUE about, instead of DISCUSS.
My experience— Joe Blow drops a firebomb mischaracterization or flat out falsehood. I chime in to correct the record. Joe shouts: “No… not allowed! I don’t talk about politics / religion!” Wait a minute. You got to spout off Your beliefs, but you stop me from proving you wrong, & setting the record straight?! Joe can’t handle the Truth, & prefers to not let the facts get in the way of his firmly held beliefs. Not opinions — but, factually incorrect statements. Since Joe can’t DISCUSS, let alone Debate, the topic… Joe stomps off in a huff, & the truth is never revealed.
Holiday gatherings are the perfect place for discussing important topics. Amongst people you care about, love, respect, & want the best for… there should be RESPECTFUL DIALOGUE. But, no. The Joe’s of the world would rather toss the wet blanket on discussion, & go storm off, pout, & make it appear as if I caused the row.
This No Politics No Religion rule is why we have people making ignorant comments about Christianity. And it’s why we end up with Progressives, Leftists, & FJB Voters. The people who only know buzz words, or Leftists talking point captions, & can’t explain what the believe, or ehy they believe it. And…. they don’t want to learn from people who KNOW WHAT they’re talking about, & WHY they believe it. And who are more than happy to Share the wisdom in a calm, factual, logical, adult manner.
Much easier for them to drop their bomb, call foul when you open your mouth, & then angrily stomp off. Pathetic, & I’m calling it out.
