Because zelensky was offered 3 different peace deals which he refused. The first of which would literally have reverted everything back to how it was before the war started. At this point Ukraine is just a money pit. They ain't gonna win, it's just a matter of how many people get killed in the process.

The first deal didn't cede any land o ly required them not to enter NATO. NATO agreed not to expand east, NATO broke that treaty 3 times. Russia is not the aggressor here.
