I made up the name, actually.
In my world, creatures are only sentient through possessing a divine element called Gesis.
It’s possible to be born without it, however. it’s completely random since it doesn’t seem to have a cause. Like a glitch.
Since Gesis keeps them sentient, without it they essentially become feral. Unfortunately, most kersi (the people) are very aggressive without Gesis.
For whatever reason, it’s seen that those with Starve Syndrome lose the ability to hold a normal shape, becoming twisted, monsterous amalgamations of flesh and eyes and teeth.
THe reason they become this is because there just so happens to be only one way to get Gesis: to eat creatures that have it.
Introducing my favorite horror tropes: cannibalism and dismemberment!
