I stand corrected, thank you. Unlike (far as I can tell) everyone else in this stream, I don't mind admitting when I am just flat out misinformed.
Be that as it may, focusing on that doesn't change the reality that Ukraine is defending itself against an invasion. Calling their wartime measures 'tyranny' while overlooking Russia's aggression seems like a selective interpretation of 'facts are stubborn things.'
Like this stubborn little fact....
According to Ukrainian law, elections cannot be held while martial law is in effect. Since Russia's invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has been under martial law, leading to the postponement of scheduled national elections, including the parliamentary elections that were due in October 2023. This suspension is a legal measure aimed at ensuring national security during ongoing conflict.
Elections are suspended to ensure the safety of citizens, as ongoing conflicts make it dangerous for voters, candidates, and officials to participate freely. Government resources needed to organize elections are redirected toward national defense and emergency responses, making it impractical to hold elections during martial law - especially considering how small of a country they are (see safety). Also, Ukrainian martial law imposes restrictions that could compromise the fairness and legitimacy of elections, as candidates might not have equal opportunities to campaign and voters could face obstacles in accessing polling stations.
Keeping your citizens safe during wartime. How tyrannical.
