True, I was wrong to impugn his military service in comparison to someone who dropped out when he thought he's actually be deployed.

I think he was planning on leaving as soon as he qualified for full retirement. But it is highly disingenuous of him to claim that he left before they had their actual deployment orders. They received notification well before he retired. Furthermore, he went above his immediate superior officer to arrange his retirement.
