They see me as an extension of them due to being related. It’s pretty old fashioned thinking, but some people still have that mentality.
If I’m a failure, they likely see themselves as a failure, and they aren't good at dealing with that feeling. And when it comes to what I have accomplished with my life, they either don’t care because it's not something impressive to them or they see it as not good enough, and I’m making the family look bad as an extension. When compared to traditional values and traditional job expectations, I’m a failure, but my goals are just different than what they expect or want out of me.
If I was seen as more of an individual person instead of an extension of the family, they probably wouldn't act this way, and I’d probably feel more enjoyment being around them.
