The Great East Hamburg Pretzel War of 1645. In 610 A.D. a monk was making unleavened bread for Lent, a Christian period of fasting before Easter, and twisted leftover dough into a shape to reward children who recited their prayers. He called his creation "pretiola," which is Latin for "little reward," The pretzel's 3 holes represented the Holy Trinity, and the knot shape may have represented the hands crossed in prayer. However, one day after a 1000 years pretzels got tired of being just one shar and rebelled. Here is a depiction of that final battle.
