I normally hate open world games. Most of the time they follow the same exact formula of conquering outposts, climbing towers to reveal maps, running 2,000 meters to get to an objective or abusing fast travel because the traversal is so boring, and stealth where you can see enemies through walls and tag them and see their walk patterns. It’s so automated, lifeless, and boring. A lot of open worlds ironically make their worlds feel fake.
A lot of other game franchises have fallen to the open world trend. It happened with Sonic, it happened with Halo, it happened with Zelda, it happened with Mirror’s Edge, and it happened with Ghost Recon. I’m not saying they’re better or worse off as open worlds (ME: Catalyst and Sonic Frontiers are great games in their own right), but that’s just how a lot of franchises are going now.
But I’m glad Call of Duty isn’t doing that yet. At least not right now. They tried the open combat missions with MW3 and it was an epic fail. Maybe they’ll try it again with MW4. Who knows? But at least we can sleep easy knowing we’ll have Black Ops 6 with a mostly linear campaign.
