By the way I just read that Merchan is not even a permanent judge, but rather a prosecutor turned temporary acting judge. If so then doesn't it seem odd that NY would have a temp judge trying the case of a former president of the United States of America?

You misunderstand his title - he's been a judge since 2006 when Bloomberg appointed him, and an acting justice since 2009 because the growth in the number of cases in that jurisdiction have outpaced the legislative expansion of the number of justice positions required to address the cases in front of the courts.

He tried this case because he specializes in felony crime, which us what Trump committed in New York.

He didn't have any say in that either - the prosecutors bring the charges, a grand jury of his peers indicted Trump on them, and then a separate jury evaluated the evidence alongside the statutes and convicted him.

The judge in this venue oversees the trial and is responsible for sentencing, which is why the whole "most conflicted judge" thing was so funny.
