His son, Hunter, is a Drug and Alcohol addict. Much of the bad stuff he did in the past, he justified as only an addict can. He is currently working a program. That program requires him to take his lumps and make amends for past miscreant behavior. You are not required to give him any special treatment. The pain they cause is often unforgiveable. But, once they are working a program, they will do all that they can do to avoid doing bad things again. That is enough for most people.

Well, right there with "justifying behavior as an addict" tells me he is not working a very good program.
First rule of working a 4th step is to "Get the BUT'S out of it" e.g. "Yeah, I beat Mable, BUT she pissed me off, AND I was drinking"
Hunter is a Lying Clown, just like his Father. Sounds like too many who use AA just as a way to get his tit out of a wringer. Had many Sponsees that acted just like him that sadly never made it. And just listening to him tells me he's one of those that are to smart for the program.

Some 30% of those who pleaded guilty to or convicted of crimes related to the "Stop the Steal," January 6, 2021 riot at the US Capitol Building have previous drug or alcohol convictions. The number of Americans considered to be Alcohol or Drug addicted is about half that number, 16%. This suggests a higher than average number of the rioters are co-morbid for politics addictions.

As the former Administrative Officer for the largest Chemical Dependency Program in Northern L.A County I am familiar with the group dynamics of addicts in denial. I'd rather be right than your friend.
