I never got much into Tull beyond Bungle in the Jungle (might have been the animal sounds in the beginning that caught young Modda's ears, as I was all big on nature back then), so I never knew that album was one song per side.

The one song per side thing is up for debate; some people say it's effectively a medley, others say it's a saga spanning both sides of the record/tape. Kind of a judgement call -pro-single 40+ min song argument: the opening melody crops up throughout the piece connected by what are reasonably classifiable as bridges, the music only breaks to silence in a few places and the album ends with the same melody & allegro tempo falling back to poco/adagio.

Off the subject, the band said the album was intended to be a musical joke and it is in places. But they also arguably created one of the most wide-ranging, socio-cuturally nuanced lyrical pieces ever.

Interesting.

I always said the best way to do something is as a joke.
When people approach something framing it as goofing off, it lets down their barriers, releasing them from their own constraints, allows them to take chances they wouldn't have taken otherwise because it really didn't matter anyways.

I agree with you, 6 hours and 30 minutes for a song referencing dementia, that's extremely long isn't it?
