Muslims had globes when Europe thought the world was flat. Word has it that that's why Cristobal Colon decided to sail west looking for Asia in 1492.
Up until the 16th century, the Middle East was at the forefront of the arts, architecture, math, sciences, technology, culture, etc. But but at least Europe had Venice (thanks to trade with the M.E., so there's that).
And of course before the advent of Islam, basically all aspects of civilization, from agriculture to the concept of zero - whatever the West got that didn't come from Asia, came from the Middle East. Literally.
But Europe did domesticate the cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower, etc - from one single species, no less! And also the rabbit in the 5th Century. So given time, they were sure to build a civilization on that. Eventually.
