You're just starting out. Give it time. You will get better. Here is my process:
1. Go to the Hot section, meme-comment & upvote favorites
2. Upvote comments in favorites
3. Go to the New section & do likewise
4. Watch favorites ascend rankings
5. Let my memes do all my talking
6. Rarely use text & then only sparingly
7. Force myself to turn retorts into memes
8. Gather ideas based on meme battles
9. Fail a few times & improve
10. This not textflip or videoflip for a reason: a meme is 1,000x more catchy than anything else

It's not even that. I have made a few big hits in the politics stream, it's just that I realize that staring into the political abyss for all this time hasn't done any good. 10 years ago, heck 3 years ago I would have been all gung ho about making these and trolling the left and sometimes the right. I guess I'm just getting older at this point.
