It’s true that I do not view patriotism in a positive light, but I’ve never heard of any leftist use the word patriot as a direct insult.

That's because they don't. They collectively decided -- via ORDERS from their media outlets -- to rebrand patriotism as nationalism and then couple that to their -- apparently nearly universal -- hatred of Christianity. Thus patriots whom also happen to be Christians are now branded as EVIL Christian Nationalists.
