Working for minimum wage during the holidays may suck but some people are a lot worse off than you

Working for minimum wage during the holidays may suck but some people are a lot worse off than you | Minimum wage workers during the holidays; It's not fair that I have to work during the holidays! I wish I had 30 days paid vacation time like fast food workers in Europe! May I remind you that you are getting paid overtime for this. Freelancers during the holidays; I've worked for days on that website you ordered, can you please pay me the amount we originally agreed upon? I can't afford to see my family and I'm behind on my rent and I don't want my landlord to evict me on Christmas. Sorry, I don't have any money to pay you. Now please excuse me, I'm running late for my flight to my vacation in Hawaii. | image tagged in minimum wage, work, employment, jobs, freelancers | made w/ Imgflip meme maker

My advice to people is don't become a freelancer, not is because getting work is only on a per gig basis and a gig is really not a guarantee but also because clients always give trouble about paying you for the work you did for them. I know being in a dead end minimum wage job sucks but minimum wage workers should have a little perspective, at least they are protected by government enforced labor rights protection laws so they always get paid, when you're a freelancer, you're basically on your own and government can't force your clients to pay you the amount you and them agreed upon.

That’s what the courts are for.
I’ve had clients try and stiff me. I have taken every one to court, and won. They pay court costs and some have had to pay interest on the principal. As long as you have a written contract signed by both parties, they are toast if you have fulfilled your end of the contract,

Don't you need to retain a lawyer first? Retaining a lawyer does cost thousands of dollars to retain and if a freelancer can't afford to retain a lawyer due to clients not paying in the first place then the freelancer is screwed.

Everyone who works for themselves is essentially a “freelancer”.
Sometimes it takes an attorney, especially if you’re talking 5 figures or more.
Most can be taken to court without lawyer, if your contract is ironclad and you have met your contractual obligations.
