Well actually I dont think they practiced war. While they where aggresive and battled humans and themselves they did could not do war the same way we do. The reason chimpanzees and humans can do war is because they are more social and live in larger numbers. Neanderthals by contrast where less social and lived in smaller groups composed of family members. So rather than war they likely practiced small scale guerilla werfare, ambushes and tribal raiding rather than war. A mayor behavioural difference between us and them. In other words, they can battle, but they can't do war.
