Sorry if you are not religious to bust down your comment but facts here.
If there is no higher authority then there is no value to a higher morality.
Atheists do *not* believe in human rights, not because they done want to but because they cant. If there is no god, there is no absolute value to life and therefore no meaning. If there is no meaning then there can be no rights. If you are not different than a rock then how do you have more rights than it? Are you not both carbon molecules? Your thoughts are no more than electrical signals, so do we give lightning human rights? If you believe in human rights or in any sense of morality, (morality defined as a set of common laws of good and bad. Example -> murder is wrong) Then you also believe in a god. (Notice how i said god, not God. Even though im a christian myself, it is important to note that Morality only requires a god not a certain god. Example -> Both me and a Muslim have a argument for morality and human rights but an atheist does not). Allow me to explain value rq, Value means that something is either
A. Directly valuable
B. Indirectly valuable because it is back by something directly valuable
(This is how inflation works, you print more of currency then the thing that backs it gets more spread thin and the currency is worth less. Example -> US dollar is worth about 81 cents because it is not backed by precious metals anymore and we keep printing money.
Now apply this concept to ideas. Ideas are just electrical signals until they are backed by something. Laws are just documents until a police force is made (btw this is what the Bible means when it says "fear the Lord", means to respect the authority that puts value on your life.) Rights are nothing until backed by something, and because they are made for the entirely of humanity, and all humans fall under the laws of "morality" and the rights that follow no human can set them in place. ( A human can not make something that applies to everyone including himself and give it true authority, simple cause and effect.) You must be above the "right or idea" to give it authority based on logical rules so Man cannot have absolute authority of Man. You will say " ah but what is above god?", these rules of logic work for this universe, however He who created how logic works does not have to abide by it. So while this applies to me and you it is sensical to say that the one who created it does not have to abide by it.
