I still remember Joyce Carol Oates on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson many decades ago saying that "You can lead a w**re to culture, but you cannot make her think." I was shocked that it was not bleeped out, but not as shocked as Johnny Carson was that she would say it. Still it was a vivid enough image to stick with me.
