Europe has still retained much of their monarchies, and even if the development of industry has improved overall living standards (which is true historically, regardless of if you resided in a capitalist or "communist" state), capitalism inherently preserves economic inequality by its nature of being a private mode of production and having a landscape of private property where everyone must submit and produce profits for a minority land-owning class.
